Case Scenario 3: Nafisa Ali
Nafisa and her husband Abdul arrived in Australia as refugees from Afghanistan in 2013. Nafisa, Abdul and their two young children Zafri (boy) aged 12 and Zoya (girl) aged 10 endured much suffering and hardship before their refugee status was recognized by the UNHCR (United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees). The family was initially displaced inside Afghanistan before they arrived at a refugee camp where they lived for four years. Nafisa and Abdul have no contact with their family in Afghanistan and do not know if they are even alive. On arrival in Australia Nafisa, Abdul and their children spent three years in a Detention Centre. The family now resides in a two bedroom apartment in the inner city. The two children attend a local school. Zoya and Zafri are fearful of people in authority and have difficulty adjusting to their school in Australia. The children are able to speak some English but are often teased in School because of their poor English language. Abdul is currently unemployed and is looking for a suitable job as an electrician. Nafisa and Abdul do not have many friends and have been cautious about meeting other families from the Afghani community. Nafisa prefers staying at home and does not go out much.
For the last six months Nafisa has been complaining of severe headaches, stomach pain, nausea and insomnia. Abdul has taken Nafisa to see a local GP but she has been guarded in opening up to her GP. A member of the mosque has suggested to Abdul that he approach the child and family center for assistance. You are a student social worker in the family support center and have been asked to meet with Abdul to assess his family situation.
