Primary Secondary Sources Assignment

Primary Secondary Sources Assignment

Primary Secondary Sources Assignment will be discussing the primary and secondary sources of image. This can be referred to as the first step in the method of understanding the whole process of image data collection, modification, editing and reversal. Beside this, there is a high need to understand both, the technical and aesthetic aspects of digital image. All such factors are well complemented by each other and a well versed method has been used for a transparent understanding of the readers.
Primary Secondary Sources Assignment In addition to this, illustrations have been provided in order to attain a harmony in having a clear though of the theories of digital image. These are driven by a sound knowledge of photo editor or digital image softwares that are needed to make any needed amendments in the digital images.

TASK 1

1.1 Digital image sources

This is quite natural to claim that a digital image is always derived from artworks; it may also arise from pieces of photographs. Nowadays, the process has become much easier with digital sensors capturing the image in the form of pixels and you can hence obtain a digital image of the same. Through this visage of digital cameras, people can now enhance the storing and sharing of images with ease. Hence, the whole process has become easier. There is also a provision of converting the analog particles into digital images when the scanner uses the concept of photo-illumination. It can convert an analog image into a digital one.
Digital Cameras now work on the capturing technology of CCD. This also brings in the capability of the images to be recorded and stored in the storage device of the camera, memory card. This was about the transition that the process of imaging has taken since its emergence, now we will be discussing two important topics that define the difference between primary and secondary sources for digital images (CDL Guidelines for Digital Images, 2008).
This has commonly been put into use by the users. These are effective for producing high quality images. Now, as we have discussed the working of digital cameras, the most used device in today’s world, it is now turn to take an overview of the primary and secondary sources of image processing.

Primary Sources

Primary sources refer to the raw material that have been noted as the first hand creations of the artists. In more technical terms, they can be defined as the first evidence of an occurrence of a moment. These can be easily used in the future in digital imaging through a scanner, which converts the image into digital format.

Secondary Sources

These are extensions to the primary sources of an image. However, these may correspond with the record the primary sources, these sources are already published and information can be gained from the published images (Minnesota Historical Society, State Archives Department, 2002).

PhotographsBiographies
Published images
Scanned Images
Published letters

Beside all these, there is the need to differentiate between primary and secondary sources of images. The basis of this kind of differentiation is on the way it is created. For example, there’s a photograph which indicates certain events ongoing through it. However, each photograph does not represent itself as a primary source.
This can be compared with a painting that represents scenes from the War and people’s sufferings in it. It is quite possible that the same kind of painting might not have been painted before and it is a first hand piece, however, the painting has been influenced by a thorough research on wartime era. Hence, the painter is supposed to have painted this after doing a meticulous research on the topic. In this case, a photograph may be termed as a secondary image source.

Primary Secondary Sources Assignment

The major devices for recording images can be noted as phones, tablets, cameras etc. Hereby, we will explain the each one of them and will also discuss the attributes associated with it.
Photo Camera
These type of cameras are basically used to capture stationary pictures; hence, they are also known as still cameras. As we look at the given picture, one may notice that the picture has been showing a blur projection. This means that the moving images have not been captured by the still camera at its original state; hence it appears to be diverging away and becomes blur. Still Cameras capture light on the photographic film and therefore, it films a picture.
Video Camera
These are the cameras that capture real time pictures or motion pictures. This is the exact opposite of still cameras. These are used for both, amateur and professional purposes in today’s life. Apart from the regular video cameras, webcams, mobile cams also prove to be effective sources for filming real time action. The same can be depicted through the above given image.
Tablet images
These are mobile devices that tend to contain the circuitry and battery in the same unit. This has a touch screen display which makes it further convenient for the users to access it anywhere anytime. Moreover, these are designed in such a way that it also enables image editing and modification through Adobe Photoshop.

1.2 Creating digital image from source

In order to convert the source image into its digital form, one needs to specify the source and also, the purpose of the conversion. In this case, it has been assigned that images need to be converted into its digital form using scanners, webcams etc. In the whole process, the following steps should be adopted in order to achieve effectiveness into digital format conversion:

  • Choose the Purpose: Here the purpose is to project the use of input devices in conversion of primary and secondary sources into digital format.
  • Choose the device: This can further depend upon conversion from primary source or secondary source.

In the second step, we will consider the use of scanners and webcams; scanners are used to convert an already taken photograph into digital format, whereas, a webcam is used for capturing light through the small opening in the camera, termed as lens. Through this process, an image is produced if the subject (CDL Guidelines for Digital Images, 2008).

Use of Photo Camera

This is a photograph taken in the classroom with the help of photo camera. This is an example of conversion of primary source into a digital format. Here, the photograph of two people sitting in a classroom has been taken with a digital device and hence results into a direct digital image formation. Hence, this is a primary source of digital image.

Use of WebCam

A webcam works similar to that of a digital camera, however, it has the additive of internet connectivity as well. These are devices that capture images of the subject with the help of sensors, known as CCD, Charge Coupled Device. In this case, the lady might have set herself in an appropriate for the image to be clicked. Hence, the webcam needs to be set an optimum level as well. Once the click button is pressed through the mouse, the picture is taken and then, instantaneously transferred to the computer, as it does not need to have built-in memory and transfers the clicked images to the computer.
In addition to this, this device is also helpful for displaying real-time videos over Internet. Order Now
