As the trade unions represented the workers and got their demands met, the workers got positively motivated to work as the environment seemed more conducive to change and respected their demands in equal measures. This reassurance of their demands being heard and responded to, and the job security that being with the union bought with it, gave the workers a lot more to look to in terms of job satisfaction. This resulted in better work efficiency for the factories and better empowered an employee which is never a bad idea.

This did take out some control from the management and put it in the hands of the unions, but in the longer run, this has benefited everybody involved. What the unions have also provided is that in a positive management-union relationship, the management can always bounce ideas off the unions as to how to make the lives of employees better which will eventually benefit the organizations themselves. Such a give and take relationship could work for both the workers and the industries equally (Fairbrother, 2013).

There have also been negative impacts on both sides owing to the trade unions. Designed to help the workers primarily, the unions have also seen many incidents of corruption in their leaderships which have led to dilution of the progress which could have been made for the workers who ultimately put in their efforts on the floor. There have also been dime a dozen incidents of unreasonable demands being made to the management with the threats of strikes being thrown in for good measure. Such cases of pure black mailing the leadership have left a sour taste in the mouth of the management which have made them wary of trade unions and seeing them as enemies instead of allies who can help them reach out to the employees better. Such incidents only lead to the degradation of the relationship between the employees and the management.

With regards to the economy in general, the trade unions have had a say in a different manner. When the trade unions started, all the working class joined them giving the trade unions a large base which listened to them and for whom the trade unions was an organization which worked for their benefit. The one aspect of society where such organizations are highly valued is politics. As the popularity of the trade unions began to soar, the political parties started taking notice and slowly began entering the unions themselves. This gave the union political backing which improved their strengths relative to the managements that they were pitted against. Given all this, the trade unions began playing a role in the politics of the country eventually. In the era where the workers formed a majority of the population the trade unions were an important ally of the political class. The parties began vying for the backing of such unions so that they could in turn garner the voting base that these unions held. It often so happened, that the workers would black en masse in a block as per their unions which proved an opportunity too big to miss for the political class.

To improve their chances with the working class population, regulations were bought in which benefitted the working class. The rules for minimum wages and maximum weekly working hours began coming in. The labour law of the countries across the world began changing. The true power to guide the economy and laws such that they benefitted them rested with the working class who called the shots through the trade unions. The labour laws which gave them rights unheard of before were passed, with a general importance being given to the welfare of this section of the society. This has slowly taken an effect on the economy (Gall, 2009). The basic premise of a trade union is to fight for better rights for the workers. One of the most important, if not the most, is the aspect of wages. Unions have been around mainly to get the workers better wages for the services that they render in the factories and other workplaces.
