INTRODUCTION

Australia as a country has only one language which is spoken and written in all parts of country that is English which gives the Australian citizen a good enough reason to not give importance to secondary language program in educational system. Many of them are firm believers that in their entire life they don’t need to speak any language other than English so there is no point in learning a new language. This is the reason why secondary language learning program is optional in Australian education system not compulsory. However problem lies with the fact that Australian population is slowly turning into a cosmopolitan population with a large number of people belonging to different race, language and culture coming to Australia on a daily basis. In a mixed population knowledge of more than language would not only help everyone to understand each other but there would be a better and cordial environment as language helps in respecting other cultures easily. In this assignment reason behind Australia’s slow growth in second language program would be contemplated and analyzed.

ARGUMENT PRO
Some very strong points favoring secondary language education making mandatory for each student are Globalization and liberalization of economies is slowly turning entire world into one open border community where people are free to do business and visit different places. In such a environment if Australia and its future generations wants to be leading the world trade and education system then they should be proficient in more than one language because even today a large number of countries and world population doesn’t have English as their primary language and such a major chunk of population cannot be ignored easily (Bianco, 2009). Secondly having a multi language and multi cultural approach in education instills the behavior of being respectful for other cultures, languages and customs in a child which is a life time quality helping the child to be a good leader and lead group of people belonging to different
cultures globally.
